on the international day of united nations peacekeepers, we honour the sacrifices of the men and women who lost their lives while serving under the un flag.
this year's commemoration is a somber one. the past 14 months have been especially deadly for un peacekeeping.
ambushes in orism in a plane crash in e were among the tragedies that struck peacekeeping last year, killing 121 people.
that toll was nearly matched in a few seconds with the devastating earthquake that struck haiti last january. the united nations stabilization mission in haiti lost 96 peacekeepers -- the biggest single loss of life in peacekeeping history.
but that dark day also became one of our finest hours, as the men and women of minustah set aside their own trauma, got the mission quickly back on its feet, and helped the people of haiti cope with the horrific aftermath.
as we honour such moving displays of courage and dedication, we also pay tribute to the more than 122,000 military, police and civilian personnel who serve with distinction in our operations across the world.
their efforts directly help millions of people...
by providing security and promoting reconciliation...
by clearing land-mines and demobilizing combatants...
by strengthening institutions and the rule of law...
by delivering aid and repatriating refugees and displaced persons
by supporting democratic elections, reforming the security sector...

win at the starting line
good afternoon, everyone. very happy to see so many new faces here. i am wang pengyuan, a senior student from class 1101. today, it gives me a great honor to give a welcome speech here, to share with you some of my experiences as well as give you some suggestions in the beginning of your college life.
actually, i am very much curious about your definitions of a good college life at this special point. someone once complained to me that the college life is totally a waste of time and money. do you think so? the answer is definitely no. here i want to tell you that if you try to manage your college life well, you will find that it will be really a valuable part of your life.
and now i’m going to share with you my personal experiences of my college life. i remember when i was a freshman, a junior student was giving a speech on this stage i was so impressed by her, and made my mind to study hard. so what i did in my pervious three years was just about making full use of college resources to develop my own potentials. in my first year, i studied hard as i did in my high school, attending every class, listening to teachers carefully, reviewing after class and doing homework by myself. college at that time was a brand new stage for me, i was trying to find my way of adapting to it quickly. i participated in various kinds of activities to improve my abilities, such as joining in the students union, going to the old people’s home, selling newspapers outside campus, taking part in chorus competition and recitation contest. i think my ability is somehow improved through the year of efforts.
the second year was a very important turning point for me. i tried to learn more by myself and then apply the knowledge into practice. the very important event for me is the 18th china daily 21st century cup national english speaking competition in which i got the first prize in our school. but what i want to mention is only the benefits i gained from this competition, for example, my english speaking ability has been improved, and no longer afraid of saying a word in public and also i made friends with many students from other universities with whom i can share experience. and some other competitions like hubei provincial translation and interpreting competition, and so many more.
another part is the social activities. in july , i went to singapore to be a volunteer in the second international traditional martial arts competition. that was also an amazing experience in my life. as you can see that i witnessed with my own eyes a different culture thus broadening my horizons. so here i want to appeal to you all that seize every opportunity to develop yourself, for the college is an integrated platform in the journey of your life through which you are bound to grow up.
the third years seems like a great leap for me. equipped with the solid foundation i laid in the previous two years, i further participated in some important major-related contests, such as the outlook talent show held by cctv, the fifth cross-strait interpreting competition and national english ability competition. through all these contests, i found myself much more confident in the road ahead.
next i’m going to give you some suggestions to help you manage your college life better.
suggestion1: learn as much as possible.
for most of us college can be an unforgettable period for us to learn something. some one once said that university is like a dye vat, which means that you may be easily influenced by others. if you want to learn something you will be embraced by knowledge and wisdom; and if you don’t have the desire to learn you will find you get nothing after 4 years’ college life.
suggestion2: cultivate your potentials and interests.
as we know, university is an integrated platform compared with high school. you do not need to bury your head in the books all day long. you need to conduct your self-cultivation and find where your interests lie in. for example, if you have the talent for dancing, you can join in the dance association. just show it. life will be colorful if there is joy.
suggestion3: always be optimistic and hopeful.
everybody knows that college life is mostly determined by ourselves. sometimes you may find that teachers can’t instruct you in every aspects. so you may easily come across difficulties with which you will get bored. but please remember that life has its ups and downs, adversity is just part of our lives. be optimistic, you will always find your way out.
in a word, combine all the suggestions i’ve mentioned above with your own characteristics and stick to it, you will find success lies in somewhere along the road.

To all the teachers, both old and new students I say good morning.
It is my honour to stand before you and deliver this eech of welcoming remarks to our newly enrowed students of the Chongqing university of posts and telecommunications academic year.
I welcome you all to cqupt and Chongqing at large. Am sure you will all at some point get lost or confused more than once as it is inevitable being in a new environment. But, am equally sure we will all enjoy this new beginning together.
Many of you are wondering how life will be like in a world and living environment so different from high school, former college, or that of your family home.
Well to be honest my first months here 3 years ago, I wondered why I was here and even after I wondered why everyone else was here……… learning in a foreign language everything seemed not to make any sense. I shared these thoughts with a senior student who I met here and all he had to say was that I would either way fail my entire courses in the first year. These words did not heal my wounded thoughts but left me with unsettled thoughts of how I was going to make it through. Am glad to stand here today and testify that I have not once failed a course since my sophomore year. This did not however happen by luck but through hard work, discipline and persistence.
Everyone here belongs and each and every one of you newly enrolled students will find your place. There will be many things, many traditions that you will come to know. But you will come to understand what i believe is most important about this place—that It is the centre of new and original thought and ideas. And it is ideas that are ultimately most important in this world.
Cqupt provides an environment good to both learn and grow as an individual and as a part of a community. Do not wait to be told or pushed to join an extracurricular activity e.g orts meetings, school organised competitions etc, all these activities are organised for us students and it is up to us to organise ourselves and enjoy these activities together. As the saying goes all work not play makes jack a dull boy.
One question you should keep asking yourself whilst here is, how do I make the most of my time here. It is ok Keep refining your answer as time goes by putting into mind that you are only here for some time and not forever, and what you want to make is the very best and the best of memories out it.

It’s so great an honor for me to meet you here at your grand opening ceremony. This is our first official meeting, so please allow me to represent all senior students of foreign language department to give you our biggest welcome and sincerest congratulations.
It’s the fourth year for me in binzhou university ,but I still remember the occasions when I first got here. I understand your reluctance to leave your dear family, your curiosity about how life will be in next few years and your ambition to improve yourselves. Of course, you’ve also been undertaking huge pressures from your parents’ high expectations. But as time passing by, you will be gradually attracted by the exciting and meaningful life here. You’re gonna experience more freedom, more interesting classes, a large number of clubs and especially, more responsibility for yourself, because from this day on, you will be the only master of your own.
First of all, being responsible for yourself needs your full dedication to study. College students as we are, study still remains as our primary task. Every good habit developed in your high school is worthy to be insisted on, like getting up early for reading, listening carefully to teachers in classes and reviewing lessons for refreshing your memory. Besides, here in the college, you are provided with the access to rich resources of books in the library, electronic documentations and lectures by experts. Anything you want is there for you, and what you need to do is just sparing time to get there and check out. I assure you that every time you read in the library, every different surprise is to be discovered.
Second, being responsible for yourself needs your openness to surrounding communities and involvement in them, which means you should be positive to face challenges. There must be something in your character that you want to change and sort of abilities that you want to improve. Then do something to change it. By joining a students’. organization, you can perform your talents and make friends; by taking part in a contest, you can enjoy both tensions of fierce competitiveness and pleasures of success. All of these experiences will be greatly beneficial for your future career.
Third, being responsible for yourself needs your strong control over your minds. 20__年9月1日的骄阳，在记忆中格外清晰。四年前的.那一天或许是许多同学一生中最后一次成为新生的日子。来自五湖四海的我们带着各自对过去的留念和对未来的憧憬来到向往已久的大学，初见面时的生涩，军训汇操时的团结，班级活动时的热络，大一的我们就这样默默地在时间的催化下走近彼此。见证着母校由上海对外贸易学院更名为上海对外经贸大学，进入大二的我们褪去了些许稚嫩，开始为自己的未来寻找合适的路，而面对着越来越多来自学业与社会的双重压力，我们的素质与能力也在无形中不断提升。第三年的我们愈发地紧张与忙碌起来，而眼神中却满是坚定，不再迷茫，走在追求未来的路上，我们初尝人生的酸甜苦辣，哪怕遇到挫折，我们也能积极面对。20__年9月，目睹着新一届大一新生报道，我们终于成为校园里最老的学长学姐，这一年的时间我总觉得是过得最快的，似乎前一秒大家都还在为理想的学校或职位做着最后的冲刺，这一秒就真的要踏出这个熟悉的校园，挥手说再见了。曾经想象中漫长却精彩的四年大学生活，就在弹指一挥间全部变成了回忆。
On Sept. 1st, 20__, the bright sunshine on that day is still in mind,clear and deep. That special day may be the last time for many of my classmates to become freshmen in their whole lifetime. From all around China, each of us came to the university that we have made efforts to enter for over 10 years, with everyone’s own yearn for the past and longing for the future. From theunfamiliarity of the first met, the unity of military training, to thefriendliness of class activities, we, as freshmen, became closer and closer toeach other under the catalysis of time, even without our notice. Witnessed our‘Shanghai Institute of Foreign Trade’ being renamed ‘Shanghai University ofInternational Business and Economics’， we entered the second year here with lessnaivety, and started to seek the proper way out for the future. In the meantime, facing the heavier and heavier double pressure from academic work andsociety, our personal qualities and abilities were improving imperceptibly. In the third year, although we were busier and busier, there was determinationinstead of confusion in our eyes. Moving forward on the way of chasing dreams,we inevitably tasted the bitterness and happiness of life. Whatever setbacks wemet, we tried to struggle and face them positively. In Sept. 20__, with the orientation of the newest freshmen, we finally became the senior here oncampus. I always feel that it is the fastest year that I have ever experienced.It seems that the first second all of us were still fighting for dream schoolsor jobs, the next second we are here almost ready to step out of the campus,waving hands to say goodbye. The once imagined long but colorful universitylife has almost changed into memory at this very moment.
如今行走在校园里，或许你会想再去吃一顿食堂的小炒，或许你会想起那些年还枝繁叶茂的六百万，又或许你会沿着那熟悉的晨跑线路再走上一遭。但我能确定的是，在座同学不会忘记我们永远的教学楼D408,不会忘记外教课上自己做的一次比一次好的演讲，当然也不会忘记图书馆里认真写毕业论文的自己和答辩侯场时的紧张。因为这些是专属于我们20__级IEMSer的共同回忆。
Today,when walking on campus, maybe you want to have a meal in school canteen again,perhaps you can still remember the flourishing look of the trees in front of the Information Building, or it is probable that you want to run for the last time along the routine of morning jogging. But, what I can confirm is that all of our graduates here can never forget our fixed classroom SD408, can never forget the so many presentations we have done on our German Professors’ classes and the better and better performance of ourselves, and, of course, can never forget the time we spent writing bachelor thesis in the library as well as the memorable feeling of extremely nervous when waiting for the oral defense. Because we are all named IEMSer 20__, and all of these are our exclusive memories.
从接触会展这个专业开始，就好像被打开了一扇门，里面有一个五彩缤纷的世界。在经验丰富的中德双方专业老师的引领下，我们开始探索，开始遨游，甚至开始实践。还记得我们在外教课上开始尝试着运用肢体语言的技巧，作为实践课去新国际博览中心给展会挑刺，去领略世博展览中心作为一个场馆的现代与专业。甚至我们当中的一些人，在老师的指导下策划组织过校园美妆展和我们盛大的毕业晚会，发挥专业所长来让我们的大学生活更加出彩。同时，作为一名IEMSer,除了专业外，另一个不得不提的就是我们会展与旅游学院了。我相信，作为会旅学院的一份子，大家一定都感受过学院大家庭的温暖，无论是来自院领导与辅导员的关心，学长学姐的指导，还是院学生会的帮助。
From the very start that we got in touch of this Event major, it just like a door toan amazing world was opened, and in this world, it has countless possibilities.Under the guidance of our experienced professional teachers from both China and Germany, we started to explore, to roam and even to put the knowledge into practice.Still remember we tried to use body language naturally while communicating on our German professors’ classes, we tried to pick holes on the exhibition heldin SNIEC, and we learnt the modernity and professionalism of Expo Center as avenue from our own experience. Furthermore, some of us got the chance to get involved in organizing and holding the Campus Beauty Show or our Graduation Gala Dinner under the instruction of our teachers. It allows us to take the advantage of our professional ideas to enrich our college life. At the sametime, as an IEMSer, besides the major, our Event and Tourism Faculty also mustbe mentioned here. I believe that, as a student in our faculty, each of our graduates should have experienced the warm of this big family, whatever it’s the caring from the leaders or our instructor, the guidance from elder schoolmates,or the help from the faculty’s Student Union.
回顾四年，我们在蜕变，在成长，在或许布有荆棘的路上一点点地成为了现在最好的自己。而此刻，我们站在要分别的路口，毕业的欣喜却似乎掩饰不了离别时的留恋与不舍。我想在座毕业生大概和我一样，不舍IEMSer这个名字，不舍总是尊尊教诲的老师，不舍朝夕相处的同学朋友，不舍这个无比熟悉的大学校园。然而，时间却从不会因为离别的愁意渐浓而停下来等等我们，大学生活结束了，新的挑战又会开始。我们能做的，只有把所有的离愁别绪化为最最美好的祝愿。祝我们20__级全体毕业生前程似锦！祝我们敬爱的老师事事顺心！祝我们亲爱的会旅学院和上贸大越来越好！
Looking back on these four years, we were always changing and maturing, and we finally became the best ourselves step by step on this thorny road. But at this moment,we are standing at the crossing to say goodbye, the joy of graduation seems cannot cover our sadness and unwillingness to leave. I think graduates here aremostly feeling the same like me, unwilling to abandon the title of IEMSer, unwilling to be apart from dear teachers and friends, and unwilling to leave this very familiarcampus. However, time never slows its pace and waits for us due to our sadness.Our college life has already finished, while the new challenge will start soon.The only thing we can do now is to turn our sorrow of parting into all the bestwishes. the birth of jesus had a story: in nazareth, a city of galilee. the virgin's name was mary was betrothed to joseph. before they came together, she was found with child of the holy spirit. joseph her husband was minded to put her away secretly. while he thought about these things, gabriel, an angel of the lord appeared to him in a dream and told him did not be afraid to take mary as wife. and mary will bring forth a son, and he shall call his name, jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.

good afternoon, everyone. very happy to see so many new faces here. i amwang pengyuan, a senior student from class 1101. today, it gives me a greathonor to give a welcome speech here, to share with you some of my experiences aswell as give you some suggestions in the beginning of your college life.
actually, i am very much curious about your definitions of a good collegelife at this special point. someone once complained to me that the college lifeis totally a waste of time and money. do you think so? the answer is definitelyno. here i want to tell you that if you try to manage your college life well,you will find that it will be really a valuable part of your life.
and now i’m going to share with you my personal experiences of my collegelife. i remember when i was a freshman, a junior student was giving a speech onthis stage i was so impressed by her, and made my mind to study hard. so what idid in my pervious three years was just about making full use of collegeresources to develop my own potentials.
in my first year, i studied hard as i did in my high school, attendingevery class, listening to teachers carefully, reviewing after class and doinghomework by myself. college at that time was a pand new stage for me, i wastrying to find my way of adapting to it quickly. i participated in various kindsof activities to improve my abilities, such as joining in the students union,going to the old people’s home, selling newspapers outside campus, taking partin chorus competition and recitation contest. i think my ability is somehowimproved through the year of efforts.
the second year was a very important turning point for me. i tried to learnmore by myself and then apply the knowledge into practice. the very importantevent for me is the 18th china daily 21st century cup national english speakingcompetition in which i got the first prize in our school. but what i want tomention is only the benefits i gained from this competition, for example, myenglish speaking ability has been improved, and no longer afraid of saying aword in public and also i made friends with many students from otheruniversities with whom i can share experience. and some other competitions likehubei provincial translation and interpreting competition, and so many more.
another part is the social activities. in july , i went to singapore tobe a volunteer in the second international traditional martial arts competition.that was also an amazing experience in my life. as you can see that i witnessedwith my own eyes a different culture thus poadening my horizons. so here i wantto appeal to you all that seize every opportunity to develop yourself, for thecollege is an integrated platform in the journey of your life through which youare bound to grow up.
the third years seems like a great leap for me. equipped with the solidfoundation i laid in the previous two years, i further participated in someimportant major-related contests, such as the outlook talent show held by cctv,the fifth cross-strait interpreting competition and national english abilitycompetition. through all these contests, i found myself much more confident inthe road ahead.
next i’m going to give you some suggestions to help you manage your collegelife better.
suggestion1: learn as much as possible.
for most of us college can be an unforgettable period for us to learnsomething. some one once said that university is like a dye vat, which meansthat you may be easily influenced by others. if you want to learn something youwill be empaced by knowledge and wisdom; and if you don’t have the desire tolearn you will find you get nothing after 4 years’ college life.
suggestion2: cultivate your potentials and interests.
as we know, university is an integrated platform compared with high school.you do not need to bury your head in the books all day long. you need to conductyour self-cultivation and find where your interests lie in. for example, if youhave the talent for dancing, you can join in the dance association. just showit. life will be colorful if there is joy.
suggestion3: always be optimistic and hopeful.
everybody knows that college life is mostly determined by ourselves.sometimes you may find that teachers can’t instruct you in every aspects. so youmay easily come across difficulties with which you will get bored. but pleaseremember that life has its ups and downs, adversity is just part of our lives.be optimistic, you will always find your way out.
in a word, combine all the suggestions i’ve mentioned above with your owncharacteristics and stick to it, you will find success lies in somewhere alongthe road.
