I have always enjoyed studying Maths, Physics and Chemistry, and I would likethe opportunity to continue this study. Chemical Engineering appeals to mebecause of the challenges involved in the application of scientific theory topractical, real world problems such as how to deal with nuclear waste. Iparticularly look forward to studying fluid dynamics as I was introduced to thisduring the Engineering Education Scheme (EES). I am aware that in today’s worldchemical engineering has an increasingly important role across a wide range ofindustries from pharmaceuticals to petrochemicals. In Year 12 I took part in the EES, which improved my understandingand skills in team working, time management, and report writing, as well asvisual and oral presentation. Throughout the course of the project the team hadto frequently correspond with mentors in industry and academia and thisexperience has broadened my appreciation of practice and application in a reallife situation. In July I attended a week-long ‘Into Engineering’ seminar run byREACT Engineering. Working in two teams, we were given a design exercise basedupon a typical decommissioning project. I also attended a Headstart course atNewcastle University, which I thoroughly enjoyed. One of the main activities wasto design, manufacture and test a small crane. I found both of these experiencesvery challenging, as we were given only limited time so we had to prioritise ourtasks and carefully plan our work.
This year a fellow student and I were awarded ￡500 by the EuropeanScholarship Prize to fund a visit to Prague to do research for our A-levelHistory coursework. I gained an understanding of the city’s culture and historyand further developed my independence. During the summer I represented my schoolon a Connexions review of a government white paper on 14-19 education. I gainedan insight into the government’s proposals and learned a lot about working withdifferent groups of people. Last year I was part of the editorial team for theschool magazine. I wrote a number of articles and I was responsible for ensuringthat staff contributions were ready for the deadline. I also enjoy participatingin a range of sports and have represented the school at football and cricket,which has further enhanced my team working skills.
In my spare time I am working towards my Duke of Edinburgh Gold Award. InSeptember I completed a 4-day expedition in the Lake District, which tested myendurance but gave me a great sense of achievement. As part of the award I havebeen helping at the local youth café once a week, which I am really enjoying asit gives me the chance to meet new people. I also enjoy reading, particularlybooks on physics and Russian history. I am glad to choose mathematics and applied mathematics. Three years’ studyhad deepened my understanding of them, especially of mathematical modeling. Pocketed with this passion and thinking, I tasted to use mathematicalmodeling into practice and solve the practical problems by attending theNational College Mathematical Modeling Contest with the other two schoolmates onbehalf of our college. It required us to evaluate the water quality ofChangjiang River according to the data, through which we had to analyze thewater pollution in every region and predict the trend of it in the future.Finally we had to bring out the plan against it. It was really a challenge forus towards flood of data and estimations as long as 17 pages. We tried almost awhole day only to filter those data and take the evaluations into comprehensiveaccount. Pulling down various models we had built before, we were so defeatedthat we wanted to give up many times. However, we finally found the satisfactorymodel thanks to our encouragement to each other which armed us with fullstrength to go further.We managed to evaluate the water quality by Compositeindex model, which could not only represent the evaluation factors, but alsoreflect the main impacts of the contaminations to the water pollution. Wepredicted the future water pollution through multiple linear regressions fittingand brought out the plan against it by building linear optimization model.Finally, we got the second prize in Beijing for our thesis. Three days’ andnights’ modeling experience had cooled our passion and gave us even more calmthinking instead. The creation of the mathematical modeling, along with thesuccessful solution to the problems through it lied on the solid mathematicsfoundation, strong modeling ability, accumulation of the knowledge on differentfields, unique creative ideas and creativity.
The experience from this contest further aroused my interest in mathematics.I began to pay more attention to its application as well as learning thetheories. In addition, I tried to catch every opportunity to take part in thepractical mathematical modeling. My efforts finally rewarded when I was in thefirst term as a junior. I had a chance to participate in the 3-day electricianmathematical modeling practice-----classifying the sports programs for a bigsports meeting. Being familiar with the Graph Theory, I immediately found theway to solve the problems by seeking the best Hamilton circuit line. Facing thenearly 8.7 billion data files with different orders much more than that on theNational Mathematical Modeling Contest, I spent a long time on Algorithm withoutany perfect result. Summarizing my failures in the mathematical modeling electrician practice andproceeding from my interest in this field, I began to think of collaborating onthe “Mathematical Modeling Saloon” with several students from mathematics andcomputer departments, taking the Computer Algorithms and mathematical modelingas the two themes of the book. In the scorching summer of 1999， with an entrepreneurial passion that wasmuch more vehement than the scorching sun， two classmates and I commenced toestablish our own business and to operate our own company. By any imagination，it was a challenging undertaking. We focused on the development of onlinemultimedia entertainment platform and on the research and development of virtualreality (VC) technology. In the process of developing the software for the VCproducts， we encountered the major obstacle of how to realize globular equationof the pictures actually taken of the real objects.

In autumn， the season of harvest， we won the Prizefor Excellent Original Conceptualization at the annual EntrepreneurialCompetition with the business proposal based on this project. In the meantime，we succeeded in attracting a risk， investment worth 5 million RMB (approximately600000 US dollars)。 The immediate infusion of the cash into our companyguaranteed the overall inauguration of our company.
In the initial stage of establishing our business， we foresaw that the VCtechnology would make tremendous headway in the future network application. Theproblem we faced at that time was the limited bandwidth of the network， which inturn circumscribed the development of VC technology. After nearly one-yeardevelopment， our technology has become increasingly mature. Furthermore， ourcollaboration with Britain's Rotography Company has acquainted us with somerefreshingly constructive concepts.
