  I am with great pleasure to submit this personal statement in support of myapplication for continuing my university education in your esteemed universityand wish you could give my application a positive and favorable assessment.

  Currently, I am a junior student in International College of Hubei NormalUniversity majoring in Accounting. Thus, I have obtained great knowledge aboutbusinessfor the past three years. Depending on that, I have determined to pursuea Bachelor degree at your distinguished university. There are there reasonsleading to me choosebusiness, the most important reason is that I am veryinterested in business. In my opinion, handling good business is the same assuccessful work of art. That’s an exciting thing. The second reason is that Ihave already learnt it for three years, so I want to broaden my knowledge aboutbusiness which will benefit my future life. The third reason is that I want tobecome a successful business lady which is my dream all the time.

  To be honesty, I am an average student but I have diligent and strongconfident heart. I believe that a good attitude can change bad situation. So Iam always keeping a positive attitude on my life. I never ever give up anychance of promoting my study. During my three years in Hubei Normal University,Inever fail a class and always do my best for assignment. However,in my mind,social activity is as the same important as class study. In my spare time, Itook part in student union and took charge of minister in arts department. Ourwell-organized activities attracted many students to practice themselves. Lastsummer, I joined the Work and Travel Programme to be a staff in an Americancompany for three months. I made good use of that chance to improve my oralEnglish and tasted western culture. I think I can understand and adapt to aforeign culture in a short period.

  I firmly believe that anyone could acquire success by their right way andfighting. This is one of the reasons why I want to go abroad. What’s more, Iwant to taste and accept some western education. I hope that I can learn moredifferences between Chinese and British university education and widen myhorizon. Furthermore,as we know, UK is a very modern country. It owns the mostadvanced education system and top universities in the world. And graceful schoolenvironments deeply attract me. By the way, if I can learn in your university Iwould cherish and appreciate this chance. In the future, I also mean to applyMaster’s Degree in UK. But after that, I will go back to my country and look fora job related to business.

  Applied Program: Wireless Telecommunications

  On August 27, 20_, at the Central Institute of the Datang TelecomTechnology and Industry Group based in Beijing, a young woman, full of energyand self-confidence, was giving a presentation entitled “The Design of theSwitching Numerical Method of the Radio Resource Management (RRM) Strategy inTD-SCDMA, and the Testing of Its Simulated Systems,” which received raptattention and high remarks from all the experts in Computer andTelecommunications who attended the meeting. That woman was I. At present,TD-SCDMA, W-CDMA, and CDMA 20__ are considered the main technological standardsin the third generation of the world’s technological development in mobiletelecommunications. And the design of a switching computation method for the RRMStrategy is a key element and technological crux for the TD-SCDMA technology. Inretrospection, I found that it was my great enthusiasm for mobiletelecommunications, and my persistent pursuit of accuracy and perfection thathave helped me win accolades from colleagues and experts.

  In China, since the TD-SCDMA uses a smart antenna, it makes a demand for afiner research on the computation method for the RRM Strategy, in areas such asPC, DCA, and HC. To me, a new starter in the company, it was a real challenge.Since the research team was new, it lacked engineering data and practicalexperience, although the equipment of the lab was quite advanced. It was onlyafter much library research, thinking, and consultation with experts did I finda RRM computation method suitable for a smart antenna. Because a smart antennahas its advantages of a more accurate VE locating and reduced searching areas,this computation method effectively lowers the complexity of the switchingprocess and its failure rate. During the time when I worked for the project, Ioften stayed up several days in a roll to perfect a lab test. But I also derivedan enormous sense of satisfaction and fulfillment after overcoming obstacles,which more than compensated the pains and difficulties that I had to gothrough.

  The rapid development of mobile telecommunication technology places a highdemand on professionals working in this field. To a certain extent, it has to bea labor of love. My keen interest in mobile telecommunications emanated from theconcept of “personal communication.” During my undergraduate years at theNorthwest University of Industry, I spent much of my spare time browsing overprofessional publications and journals, to keep myself abreast of currentdevelopments. The concept of “personal communication” I encountered during thisprocess impressed me immensely. A system of “personal communication” is one thatallows the user to communicate at anytime, anyplace, to anyone, and in any way.It painted such a beautiful of picture of a future society that I became fullyconvinced that it is a subject well worth my lifelong pursuit. This was why Ichose Mobile Telecommunications as my area of specialization in the graduateprogram. As a graduate student, I completed several research projectsindependently and successfully, including, for instance, “Turbo Code and theApplication of Its Coding Concept.” In short frame conditions, the Turbo Code,with its improved application in engineering, seems to have a bright future inreal-time voice-data service (Please see the attached article). After completingmy graduate degree, I entered Datang Group, a pioneer in China’s softwaredevelopment. Here I did software design for the switch control template used atthe RNC equipment for the TD-SCDMA system, and developed a switching computationmethod for the RRM Strategy. I went through the entire process of softwaredesign for the switch control template for the RNC equipment, from topicanalysis to the project outline and then to actual program writing.

  The present development of telecommunication technology indicates that thesmart antenna, software radio, and the transmission technology of subline 下行high-speed subdivided exchange data (下行高速分组交换数据传输技术) are key technologies fortoday’s mobile telecommunications. Software radio, in particular, has attractedmuch public attention. The use of DSP and software to solve the problem ofwireless interfaces of diverse standards on a public hardware platform hasbecome a major issue pursued by many professionals in our field. I too hope tomake my own contribution to the technological development in this area. In thenext few years, the traditional concept of using chips to build wirelessequipment for mobile telecommunication will be seriously challenged. In recentyears, the technologies and standards of the third generation of mobiletelecommunication have been rapidly updated. Software radio, I believe, will bethe future of our trade.

  My desire to know more about computer engineering prompted me to rise abovemy present conditions. The United States, as technological superpower, havefirst-rate teaching faculty and research facilities in the world. Itsideological openness and tolerance make a sharp contrast to Chinese culture,which tends to value tradition rather than innovation. Wirelesstelecommunication may be said to be one of the newest research areas, and it isnew concepts and new vision that give life to the industry. I believe that inthe fine research environment in the United States, I will be able to make“shortcuts” in attaining my academic and career goals.

  I would like to apply for admission to the Center for WirelessTelecommunications of Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University. Asthe most prestigious research institute in Wireless Telecommunications, theCenter has a large number of famed scholars and professionals dedicated to thetheoretic research of Wireless Telecommunications. Meanwhile, it maintains closecontact with the telecommunication industry, and in this way can test the theoryin practical experimentation, which in turn promotes theoretic research. It isan ideal place for me to fully develop my research potential.

  I look forward to finding a teaching position at college level in Chinaafter completing my graduate education, which will allow me to continue myresearch work in Wireless Telecommunications. I will impart my theoretic andpractical knowledge to my students, and hope that this will benefit China’swireless telecommunication industry, and society at large. I will make everyeffort to make the idea of “personal communication” a reality.

  我们对写作的方式十分感兴趣,申请人如何讲述非常重要——用清晰、准确的方式表达思想。在一所充斥着高素质候选人的学校里,决策的依据并非是数据和公式。个人自述帮助招生办做出理性的、但最终还是主观的判断。如果一所学校接一所学校地咨询,你就会发现个人自述的重要性越来越大。

  是否具有对其职业的综合反思能力

  在一篇个人自述中,我们要求申请人将他们的过去和未来有机地结合起来。我们把这种自传叫作“职业目标”自传。它为我们提供了确凿的信息,同时也可以确定申请人是否具有对自己及其职业的综合性反思能力。通常的情况是,即使是那些按照传统标准最聪明的人也做不到这一点。

  我们第二篇个人自述是关于学习目标的,让申请人陈述他们想进耶鲁的理由。他或她想在这里学些什么如何做到学以致用。

  避免三个极端的非此即彼的常见问题

  (1)避免不实吹捧以及“英国式低调”

  个人自述中最常见的错误就是把简历或个人历史重述一遍,没有反思、评价和自我批评。另一个错误就是写的都是“招生办的人想听的事情”,结果经常让人感到做作和矫情。

  还有一些人不愿意讲自己,我们把这种情况叫作“英国式低调。”这并不一定是一个错误。事实上,在阅读了无数自我吹捧(这是另一个陷阱)的文章后,这种文章倒让人耳目一新。但是,如果申请人说得太少,也会令我们无从得知他这样做是出于谦逊呢还是因为拙于表达,或者他没有想到这篇文章对我们的重要性。

  (2)在整体和简洁之间做到令人愉快的折衷

  建议不要把草稿寄过来。文章写完后要再看两遍。尽量做到清楚、准确,但也不要因为篇幅的限制妨碍文章的完整。在整体和简洁之间可以做到令人愉快的折衷。但是,大多数的自传都太长了,换句话说,过长的文章要多于过短的。

  最好的办法就是尽可能全面、诚实地回答学校的问题。让招生办的人自己去做有关录取的决定。不要想着搞什么心理战,或者企图替别人做决定。有些申请人自认为知道学校的想法,把自己装扮成某种类型,这样做会使我们失去了一个了解你的个性和思想的机会。

  (3)坦白具有风险,不必掩饰对未来的不确定性

  再说一遍,要诚实。诚实和坦白是优秀个人自述的标准,就像在工作和生活中一样,虽然这样做也有一点风险。有些申请人认为那些被录取的人都非常清楚在今后40年要做些什么。事实上,在这一时期,你对未来的想法还是一片迷茫。你可能要进入一个重新反省的阶段,感觉像是经历了一次重新组合、人生翻到了下一页、生活的方向也在改变。但是你并不清楚要走哪条路。如果你确实如此,那么就照实说;我们非常理解,即使是一些好学生,未来的管理界领袖也都经历过这种“阶段”。诚实地表示出你对未来的不确定要比装作什么都知道好得多。

  另一方面,模棱两可并不是一个好品质,为了不至于误导,我要说的是大部分的申请人在自传中都表现出了很强的目标感。

  In my opinion, the Financial Engineering is a kind of creative technology tothe Financial Instruments, Financial Means and system. It used to balance thebenefits and venture as an interesting interdisciplinary subject. It covers manyfields such as mathematics, computer science and finance, in which themathematics and mathematical modeling are the two main aspects of the FinancialEngineering. The Investment Portfolio Theory of Markowitz, the capital assetpricing model of the Sharp, Option Pricing Model of Black-Scholes and “Binomial”model of Cox can best reflect the critical position of the two subjects.

  I am glad to choose mathematics and applied mathematics. Three years’ studyhad deepened my understanding of them, especially of mathematical modeling. (Itstill occurs to me when I went to attend the class of _ department given byProfessor Jiang qiyuan in Tsinghua University for the first time. “1 kilogram offlour added with 1 kilogram of stuffing can make 100 dumplings, but what if thestuffing is more than 1 kilogram?” He used a very simple, vivid and interestingexample which aroused my interest and led me into the mathematical modelingworld.

  The first time I kissed the mathematical modeling was in the summer vacationof 20__, when I got a good opportunity to attend the mathematical modelingtraining organized by our school. Seasoned mathematics teachers told me what onearth the mathematical modeling is through some existing examples, in which theone about SARS impressed me most. In 20__, SARS broke out and shrouded rapidlyto the whole world, which imperiled our economic development and people’sliving. Therefore, study on its spreading regularity and building themathematical modeling for predicting and controlling its extension had becomethe “Archimedes Heels” for all mathematicians… So, the Logistic regression hasbeen carved in my memory. Two weeks’ training has presented me with a kind ofpassion and calm thinking much more than just those classical mathematicalmodels. As the patron saint of our human-beings, the existence of Mathematicsand mathematical modeling are maintaining our subsistence and development. Then,when SARS ran riot, when we are suffering from the pain of AIDS, what can I doas a mathematics and mathematical modeling lover who loves life so much?

  Pocketed with this passion and thinking, I tasted to use mathematicalmodeling into practice and solve the practical problems by attending theNational College Mathematical Modeling Contest with the other two schoolmates onbehalf of our college. It required us to evaluate the water quality ofChangjiang River according to the data, through which we had to analyze thewater pollution in every region and predict the trend of it in the future.Finally we had to bring out the plan against it. It was really a challenge forus towards flood of data and estimations as long as 17 pages. We tried almost awhole day only to filter those data and take the evaluations into comprehensiveaccount. Pulling down various models we had built before, we were so defeatedthat we wanted to give up many times. However, we finally found the satisfactorymodel thanks to our encouragement to each other which armed us with fullstrength to go further.We managed to evaluate the water quality by Compositeindex model, which could not only represent the evaluation factors, but alsoreflect the main impacts of the contaminations to the water pollution. Wepredicted the future water pollution through multiple linear regressions fittingand brought out the plan against it by building linear optimization model.Finally, we got the second prize in Beijing for our thesis. Three days’ andnights’ modeling experience had cooled our passion and gave us even more calmthinking instead. The creation of the mathematical modeling, along with thesuccessful solution to the problems through it lied on the solid mathematicsfoundation, strong modeling ability, accumulation of the knowledge on differentfields, unique creative ideas and creativity.

  The experience from this contest further aroused my interest in mathematics.I began to pay more attention to its application as well as learning thetheories. In addition, I tried to catch every opportunity to take part in thepractical mathematical modeling. My efforts finally rewarded when I was in thefirst term as a junior. I had a chance to participate in the 3-day electricianmathematical modeling practice-----classifying the sports programs for a bigsports meeting. Being familiar with the Graph Theory, I immediately found theway to solve the problems by seeking the best Hamilton circuit line. Facing thenearly 8.7 billion data files with different orders much more than that on theNational Mathematical Modeling Contest, I spent a long time on Algorithm withoutany perfect result. I wasn’t defeated towards this case, but so excited insteadthat I could have such a chance to challenge and improve myself. Looking updozens of files, I finally made a perfect end of the practice by using theGenetic Algorithm into full account. It needs both a successful model and aneffective arithmetic to solve these problems. , which largely shortened theoperation time and improved the operation result. I learnt a lot from thispractice. I came to know that to build successful mathematics modeling that caneffectively solve the practical problems, we must take the operation cost

  Summarizing my failures in the mathematical modeling electrician practice andproceeding from my interest in this field, I began to think of collaborating onthe “Mathematical Modeling Saloon” with several students from mathematics andcomputer departments, taking the Computer Algorithms and mathematical modelingas the two themes of the book. Every Tuesday afternoon, we would organized thosestudents interested in this field to study and exchange the ideas and arithmeticby imparting experience, sharing what we learnt, pondering together anddiscussing with each other. Both the traditional transportation & storageproblems and the modern Stimulated Annealing Arithmetic (SAA), Ant Algorithmhave ever been the topic of our discussion, from which I have learnt manythinking styles and methods to the problems from the students both inmathematics and computer department. So far, I am excited to see that thisactivity is still in the wind with more and more participants and it aroused alearning upsurge in our college.

  Recommended by my teacher, I have participated in the Teaching Reform Programof Mrs. Xing yongli----the results analysis of “Improving the mathematicsteaching quality on class”. Mrs. Xing, along with some other mathematicsteachers experienced the class mutual activities in 20__ to 20__ with thecharacter data files in form of paper investigations. For this style of datafiles, I finally used the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) as a creativechallenge instead of the fuzzy mathematical quantitative analysis models, whichfirstly knocked my mind. By quantitating data and using the AHP, I succeeded inanalyzing how the overall quality of the teachers and their teaching skills workin improving the mathematics teaching quality on class, from which we got theconclusion that the teaching skills and the way to put forward questions onclass play the most important role in the class mutual activities. Besides, Mrs.Xing collaborated with me on the thesis named “The Application of AnalyticHierarchy Processinto the Evaluation of Class Mutual Activities”. Both of uswere satisfied with this thesis and contributed it to many presses to bepublished.

  Similar with the mathematical modeling, the soul of the Financial Engineeringis also the creativity. Therefore, the perfect application of the mathematicsand mathematical modeling into the Financial Engineering once more surged myenthusiasm in this field. Furthermore, the Financial Engineering plays theimportant part in people’s living, social stability and the nationaldevelopment, which is my original intention to choose this field I think.
