Dear --,
Ever since my little sister became a teenager and started going through herrebellious phrase I just haven't been able to help myself from analysing herbehaviour. Although she grew out of her moody phase my interest in Psychologydidn't change and I find that I regularly am e-amining the behaviour ofdifferent members of my family. Psychological and social theories and analyseshave become a feature of my life, whether it is at home or the outside world.Having gained a good grounding in Psychology during my time at school andcollege I realise that this is not enough and that there is so much more for meto appreciate and understand.
The A level Psychology syllabus has confirmed my commitment to Psychology, and encouraged me to challenge and e-pand upon my perceptions of the subject. The diversity of developmental and cognitive thought I have discovered, in JeanPiaget’s e-periments for instance, has made me curious, and led me to researche-periments including Margaret Donaldson’s ‘Children’s Minds’ which drew myattention to the social conte-t in which a child learns and the child’sunderstanding of that conte-t. What is most intriguing is the fact that childrenare actively working out what the e-perimenter wants and may well misjudge thesituation through no fault of their own which contradicts Piaget’s theory onConservation.
I feel the A-Levels I study have a number of transferable skills andcomplects in aiding the study of Psychology. I enjoy Economics because we lookat the real cost of making choices and also I have learnt how concepts andtheories provide a tool to help me understand how economies work and develop. Ihave found Adam Smiths theory on ‘Invisible Hand’ most striking because itfocuses on the ideas of capitalism, a person pursuing self-interest will resultin an increase in the common good. Studying Law has given me an insight into thefundamentals that make up our English Legal System and has helped me realisethat the rule of law is crucial in providing a basis for trust andpredictability. Both these subjects have taught me to develop my analytical andevaluative skills, and also problem solving skills. I believe all the qualitiesI have gained through my courses are essential in order to strengthen mycompetence.
In my spare time, I take pleasure in reading be it short stories or neverending novels. I enjoy playing badminton and tennis: being a member of my localtennis club has enabled me to interact with other people who share similarinterests. Something which I find significant is the belief that every one of uscan make the world a better place be it by helping others. As someone pointedout “We have two hands, one to help yourself the second to help others”. I ambeen fortunate to take part in charitable events raising money for organisationsranging from Breast Cancer to Aids. My remaining free time goes in working as asales adviser. The retail e-perience has given me a great insight in to myinterpersonal skills and taught me how to deal with a various range ofsituations efficiently I would be an asset to your university and am veryenthusiastic about my subjects. The course you offer will broaden my knowledge, satisfy my curiosity and deepen my understanding; I am very determined andthoughtful, and would find the course you offer highly motivating
Yours sincerely,

Dear --,
“The world of computers is growing at an un-recordable rate everyday, computers are the most influential tools in our lives, they are our present andfuture. In my opinion nothing on the planet can measure the e-ponential growthand e-citement in the computing industry, and industry which I want to be a partof, particularly Software Engineering. As long as computers are around, SoftwareEngineering will take place after all, people need to write and code theprograms like Microsoft Word, and code your games, they don’t just appear. Mygoal is to be part of a team who creates worthwhile, efficient and usefulsoftware for consumers. And the Engineering course if I work at it, which Iwill, will be the key to my success, my current computing A-Level course is agood first step for my goal.
Other courses I am currently studying are Mathematics and Accountancy,Maths is also very important to my selected career, Maths is a universallanguage, it is used by everything, and is very involved with Computers. I enjoynumber work, so an obvious choice at A-Level was Accountancy although I findthis subject less challenging than others, its still interesting and fun, but itdoesn’t grip me like Computing and is not an immediate careerchoice.
I am hard working and currently work at my local ASDA store, I am on theProvisions/Chilled section and am part of a big team, we each depend on eachother to meet deadlines, its quite a demanding job as you have to deal and betrained with customer services and complaints as we work on the shop floorduring open hours. I currently work a 16hour weekend for ASDA, which providesthe money I need for hobbies.
My hobbies include football, going out to the cinema and the odd club orpub, shopping for myself and others, my PC, and the most e-pensive of all, mygirlfriend. I also like to swim, I find it quite rela-ing and it is goode-ercise. I also love to eat out, going out for meals with friends is unrivalledby almost any social gathering including clubs and pubs, I love sitting around atable talking and joking about with friends while drinking and eating, itssomething I try and do at least once a month. Friends are very important to meand I try to be the best friend I can.”

Dear --,
The dynamics of Psychology affect our everyday life and behaviour, this iswhat me so interested in the subject. From an early age, I often wondered why weact as we do and what effects us as we grow up. I always had a strong interestas to why people were so different even though genetically, everyone is similar.I have thoroughly enjoyed the subject, especially conformity. It fascinates meas it portrays how strong peer pressure can be and I believe this is the mainsubject that deals with why we act the way we do. We conform everyday, offeringa wide knowledge on behaviour. I am enjoying studying how the body and mind workand why certain things affect certain people. I find it useful on a personalbasis as it can be used to e-plain many problems such as how illness isconnected to stress.
For 9 years I have aspired to be a teacher. After studying psychology, I amcertain that is what I wish to do for the rest of my life. After a weeks worke-perience at Mill Lodge primary school, I decided I did not want to teach suchyoung students, however, it made me certain that I want to pursue a career inteaching. My work e-perience increased my patience with children and gave me awide overview of types of students. For a year and a half I have worked inTesco, helping my patience and confidence, which was once lacking, has improved, showing a large e-panse of people skills, with customers and staff members, giving me the e-perience of working as a team.
Active participation in school life has also been rewarding. Whilst atLight Hall, I helped with projects run by the school. From February 20__onwards, I was commended for supporting special needs pupils from Hazel OakSchool by helping with IT work. I assisted one teacher and one pupil in helpingthem create various IT projects. This boosted my enthusiasm to be a teacher. From a young age I played netball, playing for 7 years in total in the positionof goal keeper. In Year 11, I taught students in years 7-9 how to play to thebest of their abilities. However, I had to give up this hobby when startingcollege due to other commitments and desire to start e-tra courses. Regardless,I am determined to begin this hobby once again.
I was part of the student council at Light Hall, additionally attendingmeetings with the head teacher and other senior staff. In year 11, the 'StudentVoice' was introduced where two students from each year, including myself, wereselected to speak to the school's board of governors. At college, I joined thestudent council again. In my first year, I was nominated as a member of my formto be in the student council and I was then asked to attend a 'faculty meeting'every so often with my head of faculty and other students. However, in my secondyear I am part of a small group of around 10 students in the year who are the'e-ecutive'. My role is Environmental Officer, something I am proud to berepresenting and passionate about as it is a problem which is being discussedglobally and I am happy to do my bit to help. At college and school Iparticipated in Open Evenings. I then proceeded to help on a 'Welcome to CollegeDay,' speaking to students about the benefits of taking Sign Language as part ofa Enrichment course and then advertised the student council whilst guiding newstudents.
One of my main strengths is Sign Language. I began a course with CACDP inyear 12, sustaining a qualification of Level 1 in BSL. As a form of worke-perience, I will be helping students this year with their Level 1 studies.Overall, I am a committed and reliable student with passion about education.Taster days at universities (Warwick, O-ford and Birmingham) made me certainthat university is the ideal environment for me to enhance my studies. I feelthis course will lead me to success. After Higher Education, I plan to studypsychology further and become a teacher of Psychology in colleges, hopefullygiving students the chance to share my keen interest in Psychology.
Yours sincerely,

Program Applied: Marketing Management
In a highly competitive environment, the ability to create competitive edgesover one's adversaries and to achieve ultimate victory in fierce competitionsdepends not so much on materials resources as on the mental factors ofintelligence and concepts. Those concepts that can lead to new visions andperspectives and those approaches that can effectively solve problems will havethe greatest value. The overriding factor which ensures the eventualmaterialization of new concepts and gives rise to effective approaches ismanagement. As a branch of applied science, the science of management hascrucial value not only for developing countries like China which are makinguttermost efforts to catch up with the developed countries, but also for theleading multinational giants in the developed countries themselves. For a personlike me who has decided to pursue marketing management as my career objective,to sharpen my intellectual caliber, to understand the essence of management andto grasp important skills of management have become my greatest aspiration.
As a Master's student specializing in marketing and enterprise strategies, Iam very proud to report that I have made some encouraging research achievements.Of the two research papers that I wrote concerning strategic development ofenterprises-Enterprise Strategic Alliance Based on Resource Complementarity andThe Strategic Orientation and Countermeasures for Chinese Enterprises inInternational Operations in the New Millennium, the former has been published byEconomic Tribune in Sept. 20__ and the latter has been accepted for publicationby China Economists in Feb. 20__. These two research papers are the fruition ofmy active involvement in a research project named Study on Chinese Enterprises'Cooperation-Competition Models in Hyper-Competitive Conditions, which issponsored by China State Natural Science Foundation (Foundation Project No.70140132)。 Another paper entitled Brand Marketing: A Competitive Mode on aHigher Level in Modern Economics has been published by Contemporary Finance& Economics in November this year. Those research achievements canunmistakably indicate my tremendous potential to perform much more ambitiousresearches in my future degree program and I am determined to develop thispotential to the fullest extent.
I completed my four-year systematic studies in Engineering and ManagementScience as an undergraduate at the School of Economics and Management, BeijingUniversity of Aeronautics and Astronautics. It is precisely this undergraduateeducation that has reinforced my determination to pursue marketing management asmy lifelong career. Although as an undergraduate my understanding of somecourses cannot be described as profound (some might even be said to be rathersuperficial), my learning of those courses nevertheless widened my ken ofknowledge and broadened my vision.
In order to further enrich myself, I availed myself of every opportunity ofacademic exchange both on campus and off campus. I shuttled among PekingUniversity, Central Finance and Economics University, and China RenminUniversity on my bicycle in order to attend lectures delivered by the country'sleading scholars and entrepreneurs. Those lectures constituted an importantsupplement to my in-class training because they were immediately connected withthe realities of Chinese society. I also benefited importantly from myextracurricular activities. As minister of the Department of Social Practices ofthe School's Students Union, I planned and organized the School's Festival ofthe Art of Management. I also canvassed Pepsi Company to sponsor ouruniversity's basketball league match. In launching those activities, I improvedmy organizational and managerial skills. In retrospection, my undergraduateprogram was most strengthened by my self-conscious attention to various appliedsubjects-higher mathematics, statistics and probability, linear algebra, operations research, etc. It can be said that my undergraduate education (inwhich my overall scholastic performance ranked top 4th in my class consisting of30 students) enabled me to make some basic preparations in theoretical knowledgeand in the application of mathematical tools.
From Sept. 1998 to April 20__, my employment with Hisense Group in QingDaoCity, Shandong Province (one of the largest manufacturers of electricalappliances in China) was a major opportunity to practice what I had learned. Thesecond year I joined the Group, the most fierce price warfare happened toChina's electrical appliances industry. Manufacturers reduced the prices oftheir products to unprecedented low levels in order to maximize their marketshare. As an act of market competition, the Marketing Department where I workedlaunched Traveling Expositions of Hisense Products. As one of the four keypersonnel of the department, I planned and organized a series of exhibitions inmost major cities in China. Our one-year efforts achieved remarkable marketeffects. In Shijiazhuan City, for instance, of a total of 30 brands, our salesof televisions and air conditioners accounted for 24% and 18% respectively in20__. In that year's performance evaluation, I was awarded the Group's ModelEmployee.
My understanding of marketing was enriched and modified by my 2-yearpractical work experience. To me, marketing was not merely composed of suchelements as product designing, promotion through advertising, pricing models, and distribution channels. It also encompassed the analysis of the behavior bothof your competitors and of consumers, studies in organization behavior, brandmanagement, and decision-makings. Believing that a more systematic educationwould contribute to a more successful career, I went back to my alma mater inSeptember 20__ and went on with a Master's program in Engineering and ManagementScience in order to gain knowledge on a higher professional level, to follow themost updated academic information, and to improve my managerial caliber.
Backed by my work experience, my academic focus became better-defined and Iwas more self-motivated in my studies. With a comprehensive coursework coveringadvanced mathematical planning, decision-making strategies, managementstatistics, and fuzzy mathematics, I achieved obvious improvement in theoreticalknowledge and in the application of tools. I developed broader perspectives andwas able to conduct my research from more advanced professional levels. Mythesis, entitled A Study of Enterprises' Strategic Alliances Based on anAnalysis of Resource Complementarity, presented a wholly novel explanation ofcorporate alliances from the perspective of resource integration, a perspectivewhich differed fundamentally from the conventional view held by most scholarswhich explained the necessity and justification of corporate alliance from theangle of transaction cost and value chain.
Instead of feeling contented with my high GPA for the Master's program (3.6),I have come to realize how much there is still for me to learn in the field ofmanagement, especially in marketing. Most universities in China treat marketingpurely as a theoretical course, with neither case analysis nor opportunities forstudents to practice the theories they have learned. In terms of curriculum, studies in marketing psychology and individual behavior have hardly beenundertaken. Moreover, the lack of analytical tools has resulted in insufficientanalysis of the market feedback. Realizing that such deficiencies can scarcelybe overcome within a short period of time, I believe that a more successfulcareer must be pursued through a Ph.D. program outside China, ideally in afirst-rate university in the United States.
With my undergraduate and graduate background in engineering and managementscience, I would like to focus on one of the following areas in your Ph.D.program: a. marketing management; b. behavioral approaches to marketing orconsumer behavior; and c. channels of distribution. I have also drawn up mytentative career objective. I will complete my doctoral program by undertakingextensive researches and carrying out some specific projects. After obtaining mydegree, I will seek some teaching experiences in an American university whilecontinuing with advanced researches on the latest research topics. In this way Ican keep developing my academic aptitudes. After accumulating sufficientteaching and research experience, I will seek a teaching position in aprestigious university in China where I will share with my future students andcolleagues my research findings and the knowledge I have acquired in the UnitedStates. I hope to develop myself ultimately into a leading specialist inmarketing and management who can contribute to bringing Chinese scholarship inthis field onto a more advanced level.
CMU's Ph.D. program in computer science is heavily integrated with researchactivities and is designed to nurture people with raw talent and intellect in anenvironment which permits them thorough immersion in research and coursework. The program promises to produce well-educated researchers and future leaders incomputer science. I am very excited over this wonderful vision because such aprogram offers me a basis to translate my dreams into realities. Without such aprogram, many of my dreams will remain mere fantasies.

Dear X,
Since I was young I have always had a keen interest in the way that thethings around me work. From marvelling at the telephone to how planes can fly, engineering advances have never failed to captivate me.For this reason,I havealways tried to find out how such things function, and about how they have hadan impact on the society we live in today.Coupled with the fact that I havealways enjoyed the logical and problem-solving processes involved in maths andphysics,I decided several years ago to embark on a career in engineering.
Since then,I have endeavoured to find out as much about engineering aspossible.I researched the great engineers such as Brunel, and discovered thegreat works they had completed.I have attended several engineering conferences, the most recent of which I was selected to speak live on radio about myexperiences. And once I had completed several weeks' worth of work experience,Iwas assured that it was the career that I wanted to pursue.
This summer,I took part in the Nuffield Bursary scheme for a month, working in a team,at Aerogistics Ltd.Our project was to analyse and implementa new system for the distribution of consumable materials to the individualdepartments within the company. We found the current system to be highlyinefficient and after much data gathering and thought, presented our findings tothe senior managers of the company who agreed with our ideas. The last week wasspent starting the implementation of these ideas.I found the experience to behighly challenging, yet rewarding especially as it led to me gaining a GoldCrest Award.I also found it useful as I got to see engineers at work and thedaily problems that they face.I learnt that there is a lot more to being a goodengineer than possessing technical competence, although this is undoubtedlyimportant; team work, communication and leadership skills are vital as well.
I have also recently been selected to complete two placements with armyengineers. One of these placements will focus on the more practical side ofengineering while the other will focus on the skills needed by a professionalengineer focussing on project planning and leadership.I hope to find theexperience useful.
In my spare time I like to play sport and music. In secondary school I wascaptain for the Netball and Football teams,as well as taking part in variousother sports. The experience of this greatly improved my team working abilitiesas well as my fitness. As a keen musician I am working towards my grade 5 theoryand grade 7 practical on cello.I am a member of a Youth Orchestra, and havejust recently completed a tour of Italy.I am also in the school orchestra andhave led several orchestras in the past, before progressing to the LYO.
In school,I am Deputy Head Girl, helping to lead a team of over 40prefects.I find this to be a challenging and stimulating role and believe ithas developed my confidence immensely. As well as carrying out the normal dutiesof a prefect, such as supervising younger students,I must lead and manage theother prefects. My role involves arranging rotas, organising after school eventssuch as the Year 7 social and parent's evenings and public speaking as well asother responsibilities, which have developed my communication, organisation andleadership skills immensely. The role requires a lot of commitment, but it hashelped to improve my time management,as I try to strike a balance between itand school work, which is my main priority.I have also been selected to competein the Physics Olympiad and have been entered for the Biology AdvancedExtension.
During my time at university I hope to gain a good degree, which will standme in good stead for when I enter the world of work.I would like to continue myeducation in a place where I can thrive both academically and socially, andwhere I can put my determination and motivation into good use.Thank you.
Yours sincerely,
